Stefan Ballmer is assistant professor of Physics at Syracuse University’s Gravitational Wave group. He is a member of the Advanced LIGO design team. He also was lead commissioner at LIGO Hanford (in Richland, Wash.), responsible for making sure the detector worked. Ballmer was in LIGO Hanford’s control room the night before the detection.
His research focus is the direct observation of Gravitational Waves, and observing the relativistic universe with them. He commissions and characterizes the Advanced LIGO interferometers, and develops technology for the next generation of gravitational-wave detectors.
