For this NIH program, Syracuse University may serve as the lead institution for one proposal. For this Limited Submission Opportunity (LSO) we are issuing a call for intent to submit to gauge faculty interest in a particular funding opportunity. At this stage, only submission of a form and abstract is required to express interest in the opportunity.

Synopsis of the Program
The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research.
This NIH Neuroscience Development for Advancing the Careers of a Diverse Research Workforce (R25) is a flexible and specialized program designed to foster the development of neuroscience researchers from diverse backgrounds, including from underrepresented groups across career stages. Thus, it encourages applications from applicant organizations that propose innovative mentoring and professional development activities in the mission area(s) of the NINDS and/or NIMH. This Neuroscience Diversity R25 initiative will focus on factors that have been shown to affect retention of underrepresented graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and junior faculty in neuroscience research such as mentoring, scientific networks, professional development, and attention to the structural and institutional environment regarding inclusion (http://acd.od.nih.gov/dbr.htm; Structure and Belonging: Pathways to Success for Underrepresented Minority and Women Ph.D. Students in STEM Fields; The Science of Effective Mentorship in STEMM).
Programs that target transitions and/or more than one career stage for neuroscience career advancement and progression are strongly encouraged. This initiative will support the development of collaborative research education partnerships that will increase participants’ awareness and interest in the neurosciences, develop participants’ scientific knowledge and research skills that will allow them to progress and transition to more advanced neuroscience-related research education and training activities. Proposed program interventions to enhance workforce diversity in response to this FOA should also focus on asset models and leadership opportunities, rather than solely deficit models and remediation (recommendations from 2017 NINDS Activating a Neural Network; 2016 NINDS Forming a Neural Network Workshops; and NAMHC Workgroup on Research Training Report).
Only one application per institution is allowed
Funding and award period
Application budgets are limited to a maximum of $250,000 direct cost per year, and must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project.
The scope of the proposed project should determine the project period. The maximum project period is 5 years.
Call for Intent to Submit Limited Submission Process
For this Limited Submission Opportunity (LSO) we are issuing a call for intent to submit to gauge faculty interest in a particular funding opportunity. At this stage, only submission of a form and abstract is required to express interest in the opportunity. If there is more interest than the number of submissions allowed by the sponsor (e.g., four faculty have expressed interest in applying to this opportunity where the sponsor only allows two proposals from the University), we will announce an internal competition for pre-proposals.
If no applications are received by a call for intent to submit deadline, the LSO will become “first come, first served.” At this stage, eligible applicants may express interest in the opportunity any time before the sponsor deadline.
If a proposal is selected and the PI or team decides to forgo an application, they must notify the Office of Research within five days of the selection notice. This allows another proposal to be selected and move forward. If the PI fails to submit a proposal and has not notified the Office of Research, the PI runs the risk of being disqualified from future LSO competitions.
For any sponsored research projects, the applicant must be eligible to serve as Principal Investigator for the project, unless otherwise noted in the LSO. Please see our PI Eligibility requirements to ensure you are eligible.
